Jesus said, “Bring them here.” Then he had the people sit on the grass. He took the five loaves and two fish, lifted his face to heaven in prayer, blessed, broke, and gave the bread to the disciples. The disciples then gave the food to the people. They all ate their fill. They gathered twelve baskets of leftovers. About five thousand were fed. (Matthew 14: 18 – 21)

When the disciples looked at the crowd, they saw a problem. Too many people and not enough resources. Jesus saw something different. “Bring them here to me.” The miracle began the moment the disciples stopped focusing on what was missing and trusted that what they had could become enough.

That challenge speaks directly into Catholic education today. It is easy to become overwhelmed by growing expectations, busy schedules, limited resources and the complex needs of the young people entrusted to our care. Yet the Gospel reminds us that our mission has never depended on having everything. It has always depended on bringing what we have with generosity, faith and courage.

Every lesson that sparks curiosity, every conversation that restores hope, every student who is welcomed instead of judged, every family who experiences compassion and every quiet act of service behind the scenes becomes part of the way Christ continues to feed and nourish the world. The work of Catholic schools is not simply to educate minds but to shape hearts, awaken compassion and form young people who will choose justice, kindness and hope in a world that desperately needs all three.

Perhaps the real question in today’s Gospel is not whether we have enough, but whether we are willing to place what we have into God’s hands. The miracle of Catholic education is found every day in educators and support staff who refuse to believe that small acts of goodness are insignificant. When we offer our gifts with love and purpose, we become part of God’s work of transforming lives, one student, one family and one community at a time.
