The Gentiles' rulers were hard and merciless leaders who made certain their power and authority was well known to their subjects. Attended well by their servants and their people, these rulers had a titanic sense of self-importance.

This power construct exists today in a smaller scale in communities, schools, and sports teams. In today's Gospel, Jesus' instruction to his disciples turned that social order upside down. The greatest and first are those who are servants to others. Selfless servanthood emphasises others' needs rather than personal whims and desires. We are called to serve rather than be served. Jesus lived this model of servanthood. How can you live a life in loving service to God and to others?
